The colonial era in America began in the late 1600s, when Europeans began colonizing the eastern coast, and spans through the Revolutionary war, when the 13 British colonies declared independence from England. As you can see above, it’s been carefully restored and renovated into its current elegant design that maintains the historical interior. Destrehan Plantation built in 1787 in Louisiana is a good example of a French colonial style house. In 1840 it was further remodeled incorporating Greek Revival architectural elements. Below is two photos of the same historic Georgian colonial style house. Lilac paint gives this classic Craftsman bungalow a modern twist, and a cherry red door frame adds a vivid accent.

An example of a traditional colonial house with a modern twist, this is a great mix of colors to freshen up a classic colonial home that still keeps its colonial feel. Colonial style homes are named as such because they were built by colonists who based them on similar styles of homes in their motherland. The styles of these homes were also influenced by the different materials they had around them, which, in turn, influenced the classic color palettes. With elegant architecture and an attractive outdoor area already in place, this Colonial-style home didn't need a full-blown renovation. A fresh color palette is all that was needed for an updated Colonial exterior.

A popular exterior paint color for shutters and doors, black is also being used more frequently to cover the entire house. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain or humidity, a bonus of using black is that it hides mold well and will require far less frequent cleaning than a white home would. There’s nothing as timeless as a white exterior paint job, and the Colonial period made use of this neutral paint color liberally. A seamless tie to the simplicity of the era, a white facade with white trim was a very common combination used on Colonial houses. A palette of complementary colors including a deep blue-green facade, pale conch shell pink and yellow-orange trim, and a rich burgundy-colored door highlight the architecture of this three-story home.

At the time, the property consisted of 100 acres which included two islands. In 1983 William and Mary Ann Dykes purchased the home and started restoring it to its 18th Century glory. Ho Chi Minh Presidential Palace, Hanoi Vietnam is an example of French colonial architecture. Historic Hammond-Harwood House is one of the premiere remaining houses from the British Colonial era, began construction in 1774 in Annapolis, MD.

While original Craftsman bungalows were typically painted in earth tones such as greens and browns, today you can find them in a rainbow of colors. This renovated Cape Cod-style home from AHG Interiors is painted in a deep, dark shade of navy blue, with green undertones that help it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. White trim adds contrast and a gray slate roof is the perfect complement. The Exterior Historic Palettes pay homage to key architectural styles throughout American history.

Though grand in size, this Colonial home sorely needed updating. Faded yellow siding and emerald green shutters exposed the home's age. With untended landscaping, the outdoor spaces were underused and unappealing. The Colonial-style renovation upgraded the plain portico into a spacious covered porch, which allows room for plenty of outdoor furniture. New columns replicate the original style, so the addition looks like it's always been there. Brick steps lined with lush landscaping beckon guests toward the entrance.
